Jungle Pam Hardy: The Woman Who Became an Icon of America’s Golden Age of Drag Racing

Jungle Pam Hardy became one of the most recognizable women in American drag racing, winning fans with her charm, confidence, and unforgettable presence. Although her career in the sport lasted only four years, her name remains closely connected to its golden age. Often photographed beside Jungle Jim’s famous race car, wearing her signature shorts and tank tops, Pam became an important part of the excitement that surrounded the sport.

Her story began in May 1972, shortly before her high school graduation, when she met professional drag racer Jim Liberman, better known as “Jungle Jim.” Pam had originally planned to attend West Chester University, but meeting Jim changed her plans. She soon joined him on the road, helping prepare his funny car, checking for leaks, packing parachutes, and assisting with race-day preparations. Her personality quickly made her a fan favorite, and she eventually became the first woman to appear on the cover of Hot Rod Magazine.

Their partnership brought even more attention to drag racing, but tragedy struck on September 9, 1977, when Jim died in a high-speed Corvette accident. His death marked a turning point in Pam’s life, and she decided to leave professional drag racing rather than work with another driver.

Despite stepping away from the sport, Pam continued honoring Jim’s memory through special appearances and racing events. Over the years, she built a new life while remaining connected to the motorsports community. Today, Jungle Pam Hardy is remembered not simply for her photographs or appearance, but for the passion and personality she brought to drag racing during one of its most memorable eras.
