This photo is from 1976, but one thing is completely wrong!  But look carefully.   There is one detail in the photograph that simply could not have been there in 1976.   And once you notice it, it becomes almost impossible to ignoreThe young woman standing beside the lockers is holding several books against her chest. Her outfit would not necessarily look unusual for the decade, and neither would her hairstyle or brown shoulder bag.

However, take a closer look at her wrist.   She appears to be wearing a modern smartwatch. That small black rectangular device is the giveaway.   Modern smartwatches capable of displaying digital information, connecting to smartphones, tracking fitness data, receiving messages, and running apps belong to a completely different technological era.

In 1976, personal technology looked dramatically different.Digital wristwatches did exist during the 1970s, and they were considered futuristic at the time. Early models generally displayed the time using LED or LCD technology. They did not resemble today’s touchscreen smartwatches, and they certainly did not have the advanced features people now take for granted.   There were no smartphones for a smartwatch to connect to. There was no Bluetooth, no mobile apps, no text-message notifications appearing on your wrist, and no modern fitness-tracking ecosystem. That is what makes the photograph so convincing at first.

Almost everything else blends naturally into the supposed setting. The lockers have the worn, industrial appearance associated with older American schools. The students are carrying physical textbooks. Bell-bottom-style jeans can be seen farther down the hallway. The hairstyles and general fashion choices also closely resemble photographs from the mid-1970s. Your eyes therefore accept the scene before your brain begins examining the smaller details.   Then you see the watch.   It is a perfect example of how a single modern object can completely change the way we interpret an image.

Interestingly, people often miss details like this because the brain tends to process an entire scene before focusing on individual objects. If the overall setting matches what we expect a 1970s school to look like, we may automatically assume everything inside the photograph belongs to the same period.
