Skin reactions are easy to brush off. A little redness, itching, or swelling often seems harmless and may disappear on its own.

But sometimes, the skin can warn us that something more serious is happening inside the body. The key is to notice what comes with the rash.

Hives, also called urticaria, are raised itchy welts that can appear quickly and move across the skin. They are often caused by allergies, stress, food, medicine, insect stings, or environmental triggers.

Most hives are not dangerous when they happen alone. But they become more concerning if they appear with breathing problems, chest tightness, wheezing, dizziness, or swelling of the throat, lips, or face.

These symptoms may point to anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction that can get worse very fast. What starts as itching or a few welts can become an emergency within minutes.

The safest rule is simple: a rash alone may be minor, but a rash with breathing or throat symptoms needs urgent medical help right away.
