John Cena and Nikki Bella got engaged in 2017, but years earlier she had already opened up about how one movie scene affected her
Nikki Bella, John Cena’s former fiancée, once opened up about the surprisingly lasting effect that watching his nude scene with Amy Schumer had on her after the film Trainwreck came out.
Bella, the professional wrestler who also goes by Nikki Garcia, admitted that she did watch the scene involving her former partner in the 2015 comedy, and it clearly stayed in her mind longer than she expected.
When the movie was released, Schumer even joked on Australian talk show The Project that “he was actually inside me,” which only added more attention and awkwardness to the whole scene.
Cena later told Conan O’Brien in 2016 that he had kept putting off telling Bella that he would be filming a very graphic sex scene with Schumer, and he admitted that handling it that way had been a mistake.
He added: “She has such beautiful brown eyes, and they glowed with hellfire.”
So by the time Bella spoke about it publicly in 2018, it was clear she still had complicated feelings about what she had seen and the effect it had on her relationship.
Speaking on her reality series Total Bellas, Bella talked about what it was like to watch the scene, which happened two years before the pair got engaged in public at WrestleMania. Their engagement ended about a year later.
According to Bella, the moment did not just pass and disappear. It had a real effect on her and stayed with her in a way she found hard to shake.
Explaining how much the scene lingered in her mind, she said: “Imagine watching your man do a sex scene and have the whole world see his big butt.”

Amy Schumer and John Cena’s Trainwreck sex scene has become infamous
“You know, you get visuals. I swear, I couldn’t masturbate forever because I just think of the sex scene.”
Although that moment became one of the more talked-about details from their relationship, the actual reason the couple later split was more serious and tied to bigger life choices.
Cena had admitted that he did not want to become a father, while Bella had been open for a long time about wanting children, which left them in conflict over something neither of them could really ignore.

When Bella later explained why she decided to end the relationship, she said she did not want Cena to feel pressured into becoming a parent and then live with regret over a decision that was never truly his.
Speaking on the Better Together with Maria Menounos podcast, she said: “Even in the end when he was willing to give me kids, I could just tell it’s not what we wanted,”
She added: “And that’s really, like, you know, what pushed me in the end, was like, if I’m going to force someone to be a father.”
Not long after the breakup, Bella tried to explain where things stood between them emotionally and made clear that, despite the pain of the split, the connection between them had not completely disappeared.
She said: “Right now, we’re just friends. We’re working on each other and trying to work on us, and we talk every day.”

“He is not only my best friend, but he truly is one of the best people I have ever met, and he has patience with me and he has really taught me a lot over the last few months, and I think one of those things is an inner strength that I thought I had, but didn’t realise how strong I had it.'”
In the years that followed, Bella went on to marry and later divorce Dancing with the Stars professional Artem Chigvintsev, while Cena married Shay Shariatzadeh in 2020.
As for the Trainwreck scene itself, it has continued to follow Cena for years, and he has even discussed the comedy scene more recently while speaking on the Club Shay Shay podcast.
Looking back on the experience of having so many people see him in that kind of scene, Cena said: “So it’s real embarrassing, and on top of that, to do a comedic sex scene when you’re making fun of yourself.”
That helps explain why the moment remained memorable for more than one reason. What was meant to be a comedy scene ended up becoming a strange and uncomfortable talking point for both Cena and Bella long after the movie first came out.
