Sydney Sweeney returns as Cassie in season 3 of HBO’s Euphoria, but one scene has left parts of the audience uncomfortable
Sydney Sweeney is facing strong criticism from some Euphoria viewers after a scene that many have described as crossing a line. The moment has led to heated reactions online, with people accusing the show of leaning into something they find deeply uncomfortable.
Season three of the HBO series has finally arrived, and fans have been quick to dive back into the story. It has been a long wait since the second season ended, so there was a lot of anticipation around how things would unfold this time.
Still, Sweeney, who plays Cassie, has become a major talking point for one specific scene. The reaction has been intense, with viewers expressing their frustration across social media and using strong language to share their opinions.
The backlash online comes not long after the 28-year-old actress was already in the spotlight for a separate controversy tied to her American Eagle jeans campaign. That situation drew attention before the show returned for what many believe could be its final season.
Criticism has not been limited to Sweeney alone. Sam Levinson, the creator and producer of Euphoria, has also been called out by viewers who believe the scene should never have made it into the show.
Warning: Spoilers for Euphoria below
Now that the new season is out, audiences have finally seen what happens to characters like Rue, played by Zendaya, along with Cassie, Maddy, played by Alexa Demie, and Nate, played by Jacob Elordi. The story picks up after their high school years, showing where their lives have taken them.
It did not take long for viewers to learn that Cassie had started creating adult content. This development appears to happen without Nate knowing, even though the two are now married, adding another layer of tension to their relationship.
In several scenes, Cassie is shown wearing revealing outfits designed to match specific requests. One moment in particular stood out, where she appears with a pacifier, styled with pigtails, and posing in a way that drew immediate attention. Her outfit, described by viewers as resembling baby-like clothing, added to the discomfort many felt while watching.
Sydney Sweeney plays Cassie in HBO’s Euphoria
As expected, the scene quickly sparked debate online. Some viewers argued that it seemed to reflect themes they found disturbing, and they did not hold back in sharing their thoughts.
Many directed their frustration toward Sweeney, questioning her decision to take part in the scene. Others also pointed fingers at Levinson, suggesting that the responsibility lies with the creative direction of the show.
One person on X wrote: “Sam levinson is weird as f***for even coming up with this and sydney is weird as f***for not saying no to it.”
A second viewer reacted strongly as well, saying: “What the actual f***, this is wrong in so many ways. Was the f***ing pacifier needed.”
Another person questioned the decision behind the scene, asking: “Why the f***would Sydney agree to be portrayed like this????? Wtf??????”
One more user added their frustration, writing: “The fact that nobody is taking this seriously is pissing me the f*** off??? this is literally feeding into a pedophilia kink what the F***.”

She’s an OnlyFans star in the new season
Not everyone agreed with the criticism, though. Some viewers felt the backlash was over the top and defended both the show and those involved.
One person responded to the outrage by saying: “Ur weird as f*** for thinking it’s weird as f***.”
Another user offered a different perspective, explaining: “But it’s fiction. It’s a mockery of those who make and consume that kind of stuff. It’s like you complaining that a movie features a corrupt politician or a serial killer.”
Before the season premiered, Sweeney had already spoken about her role and what fans could expect from the new episodes, hinting that things would be more intense than before.

The actor has opened up about playing Cassie
Speaking to Empire, she shared her thoughts on Cassie as a character and the direction of the show: “I have such a spot in my heart for Cassie, and I hold her really close and dear. She is crazy. She makes so many mistakes. She’s flawed on so many levels, but she does it all from a place of love. It could be a sad version of love, as well. It’s so much fun to play a character that is as crazy as she is.”
“Sam [Levinson] is such a brilliant filmmaker to work with, because I’ll read something, then I’ll call him, and I’m like, ‘Let’s go crazier’. And he’s like, ‘I’m all in’. And this season is unhinged.”
Her comments suggest that the creative team intentionally pushed boundaries this season. For some viewers, that approach adds depth to the story, while for others, it raises serious concerns about how far the show is willing to go.
